Elf on the shelf. A curious little tradition popular in the US.
But now it is here! Yep we got a gorgeous little parcel from 'American Nanny and Grandad' a couple of weeks ago and low and behold, it was our very own elf on the shelf.
The elf comes with a really lovely book that we enjoyed reading to welcome our elf into the house.
The book has a few suggestions. Name your elf. As soon as I read that I knew exactly what Jakob was about to say. Bonny. I don't know why, how or where he first heard the word/name bonny. But for a few months now it's been his favourite word.
Every day we hear 'you're not daddy, you're Bonny' as he bursts out laughing.
'Where's bonny?'...
'Joshua, I'll be Jakob, and you can be Bonny'.
He always says it in a quirky way, with some sort of accent, almost as if he's questioning the word.
So of course, when I asked what we should name the elf... 'Elf is called Bonny'.
Fair enough.
So the point of the elf, is to appear on the 1st December, watch the children of the household during they day and then at night quickly fly back to santa to report on their behaviour so that santa can decide whether or not they recieve presents. He comes back again the next day in a different spot, and the kids get to find him again.
Now, as much as I'm loving Bonny, I don't want the boys growing up believing they only deserve gifts if they act in a certain way, or do what others tell them to do. Our elfs purpose will just be to spread the magic of Christmas - rather than reporting on behaviour!
We will definitely be moving him around the house when the boys are in bed, letting him get up to lots of mischevious naughty little elf things. On my pinterest browsing I have found lots of awesome elf ideas... BUT i have also seen some ideas that I would never in a million years do... such as drawing on the walls or over pictures in frames (I have a hard enough time trying to stop the boys from doing this, I don't need Bonny showing me up!)

1st December 2013: Hi Bonny!
Sneak preview, this is where Bonny started his journey this year! Jakob found him really quickly, and soon Joshua was pointing going 'Christmas, Christmas!'
