London Wetland Centre at Christmas

Last weekend we visited the WWT in London. They had a weekend event for families with husky sleigh rides, hug a husky, visit santa etc.

We have never been before, we've been to the Wetland centre in Arundle ages ago and have been meaning to pay this one a visit for ages since it's only about 20 minutes away by car! I was off work the weekend they were doing their Christmas festivities so it seemed like a great opportunity!

It is located in Barnes, which is nice because although it is London it isn't in the congestion charge zone and once you get there it's kind of like you've left London and entered a rural oasis!

As you can see it is quite a big area! We were there all day and only managed to go to the section I've outlined in red. Although that is probably just us - I don't think we've ever managed to get around a whole attraction in one day, from Joshua inspecting every object he finds to Jakob finding one thing in particular he loves and spending ages there.

You'll have to excuse my photos, my camera is broken so I've only had my phone camera and it seemed to make everything look incredibly bright that day. The weather was gorgeous though, really bright and sunny with blue skies, although still quite chilly!

We really enjoyed wandering around the areas we did manage to see, and the boys absolutely loved it. I'm very tempted to get an annual membership now because they want to go back already, and the daily admission prices aren't exactly cheap.

I think the boys favourite part was the fishing ponds. They had an area with ponds and nets that you could dip into and see what you could find. We spent ages there, twice! The most we found was a pond snail, but I guess that's because it's winter. Even so Jakob absolutely loved it.

They had a show on that we decided to see. It was in an old hut, there were mats all on the floor for children to sit on and a man dressed up as an explorer came in and talked to them about the mission to the south pole and past explorers... He was very funny and when he asked questions some of the kids answers were hilarious, in the way that only an innocent child could be! They then got to make a pair of binoculars and were given a WWT notepad to become little explorers themselves. Jakob absolutely loved his binoculars and has been wearing them ever since!

Although one of the reasons we decided to come this weekend was to do a husky ride there was a big que and the boys didn't fancy standing and waiting. We found a bench and sat as the huskys walked past with children riding in the sleigh, the boys loved watching them.

We did 'hug a husky' though! They set up a little tent and you could go in and cuddle this gorgeous dog, she was so friendly and the boys loved her. They took a picture of the boys sitting on this sleigh seat next to her and while they were printing the photo the boys loved giving her cuddles and stroking her.

By the time we were leaving the sun was starting to set, it looked so gorgeous across the water, and I really wanted to capture it but although I got some quite pretty pictures they don't really compare to the real thing!

It was so quick too! As we were heading back to the carpark every time I took a picture it got brighter and brighter.

By the time we got to the car park it honestly looked like the sky was on fire, it was stunning in real life. Then as we were driving home it got even more beautiful and I kept wanting to stop and take pictures, but by the time we were home it was pitch black!
